The current Vannes Museum of History and Archaeology is also commonly known as Château Gaillard because of its history. It is in fact a former hotel built into the ramparts of Vannes, dating from the 15th century, which housed the parliament of Brittany.

Over the centuries there have been a succession of owners, and in the 20th century the Morbihan polymathic society took possession of the manor to exhibit a series of archaeological and historical objects.
The building still retains its old fireplaces, 15th-century beams and old archives.
